Some people believe that it is wrong to keep animals in zoos, while others think that zoos are both entertaining and ecologically important. Discuss both views.

Band 5.5-6.0

In this modern world, perspectives of how to keep animals are varied between people. Some people think about caging them in zoos or forests while others think it is illogical to limit animals’ movements. I am going to discuss these views according to environmental, personal and economic perspectives.

Keeping some animals in zoos will protect them against predators, bad weather, and food availability. Nevertheless, keeping animals free is more logical than isolating them because if we keep animals caged, they would not be able to have fresh air and chase other animals. Therefore, it is cruel keeping animals confined in small spaces. It is advisable to put our efforts into keeping our creatures in their natural habitats, in order to give them the opportunity to experience normal life.

Keeping animals is essential because some animals are in fact becoming extinct. Although keeping these animals is costly, the profits made by keeping these animals are substantial. Take Indian lions for example; a wide range of people travel to India to see these animals in circuses in India. However, some people think that governments should invest the money in improving the infrastructure of their nations instead. Building new electrical power station, for instance, is more important than spending thousands of pounds to preserve certain creatures from extinction.

Lastly, keeping animals is important for study and research whereas others think we have no right to use animals for entertainment and in labs.

To conclude, keeping animals in zoos might have many values but it is irrational to keep these animals away from their natural habitat. The reasons are that besides they are not vulnerable creatures, they have the right to survive independently because of having feelings and emotions as human. (289 Words).

  • States the writer’s opinion: animals should mainly live in their natural habitats.

Paragraph 2 – Advantages of zoos

  • Zoos protect animals from danger (predators, weather, lack of food).
  • Zoos help conserve endangered species.
  • Human supervision can prevent extinction.

Paragraph 3 – Disadvantages of zoos / Argument for freedom

  • Captivity causes physical and psychological suffering.
  • Animals cannot behave naturally in zoos.
  • Governments should protect natural habitats instead of building more zoos.

Paragraph 4 – Economic argument

  • Zoos bring economic benefits through tourism.
  • However, ethical issues are more important than profit.
  • Government money should be spent on public services, not zoos.

Paragraph 5 – Conclusion

  • Natural habitats are more ethical and sustainable.

In the modern world, opinions about keeping animals vary considerably. While some people believe that animals should be kept in zoos or protected areas, others argue that it is unreasonable and unethical to restrict their freedom. This essay will discuss both viewpoints and explain why I believe animals should primarily live in their natural habitats.

On the one hand, keeping certain animals in zoos can help protect them from predators, harsh weather conditions, and food shortages. In addition, zoos play an important role in conserving endangered species by providing safe environments where animals can breed under human supervision. Without such protection, some species might disappear completely due to hunting or environmental destruction.

On the other hand, allowing animals to live freely in the wild is more logical and humane. Animals kept in captivity are often confined to limited spaces and cannot behave naturally. This can lead to physical and psychological suffering. Instead of investing heavily in zoos, governments should focus on preserving natural habitats, such as forests and wildlife reserves, so that animals can survive and reproduce in conditions similar to their natural environment.

From an economic perspective, some people argue that zoos generate profit through tourism. For example, many visitors travel to see rare species, which contributes to national income. However, these financial benefits should not outweigh ethical concerns. Governments should prioritize improving public infrastructure, such as healthcare and energy systems, rather than spending excessive amounts of money on keeping animals in artificial environments.

In conclusion, although zoos may have certain advantages in terms of conservation and tourism, I strongly believe that animals should not be kept in captivity unless absolutely necessary. Protecting wildlife in their natural habitats is both more ethical and more sustainable in the long term.
